Devas are a specific type of aasimar that, unlike typical examples of the race, are all in fact angelic souls contained within mortal bodies. These souls are reborn again and again, meaning that devas have access to the experiences of several lifetimes in their subconscious and sometimes waking mind as well. These souls are obliged to fight in the cosmic war against evil, though some stray from this path and are reincarnated in their next life as rakshasas. Physically, devas appear similar to aasimar, though in a fashion more distinct than many aasimar, who could be mistaken for human. Devas also possess a number of abilities unique to them. Devas bear the mark of their celestial touch through many different physical features that often vary from individual to individual. Nearly all devas are uncommonly beautiful and still, and they are often significantly taller than humans as well. Even in these cases, a deva is more than likely to regain their comely appearance after a time through their regenerative properties, though in some cases a deva deliberately chooses to enter the world in a less than beautiful body, and even the most healthy deva cannot regenerate lost body parts. Although exact appearance varies widely, all devas are marked by patterns of light and dark on their skin. Whatever the case, the dominant color makes up the regular color of skin, while the lesser shade appears in patterns across the face, chest, and shoulders. The hair of a deva is often the same color as either of the two. Devas, like godly avatarscannot be permanently killed. Just as an avatar will return to the home plane of the god it is a manifestation of to be reabsorbed and perhaps sent to the Prime again, so do devas' souls inevitably return to the mortal world in new bodies as reincarnations of their old selves. However, devas do not typically remember their past lives and are born as new individuals, and are therefore subject to the same dangers of mortality as other races, while being prevented from passing on into the afterlife permanently. Devas are mentally very capable individuals, with both unusually high perceptive ability and an impressive intellect compared with other humanoids. Devas are also, in part due to their immortal nature, difficult to attack, particularly for weakened creatures, and they have an innate resistance to both intense radiant and necrotic energies. Devas also have the ability to call on hidden memories of their past lives with the memory of a thousand lifetimes ability, in order to increase their competence. Some devas have a number of other abilities as well. For instance, some devas have a special resistance to the effects of cold or fire or have an enhanced resistance to positive energy. Others regain the use of their wings for flight or relearn innately the Supernal language. Devas are eternal creatures, never truly dying except in very rare circumstances and never truly being born. Although some devas are born from the unions of celestials and mortals, this most likely commonly refers to the aasimar descendants of devas, who are sometimes mistaken for the immortals. Devas themselves often spring into the world as fully formed adults, with no memory of where they came from. Unlike most races, however, when a deva dies it does not go to the Fugue Plane to be judged and sentenced. Such occurrences rarely last longer than seven years, however, and can sometimes last less than a year.
When the deva hits with any weapon, the weapon deals an extra 4d8 radiant damage included in the attack. The deva can innately cast the following spells, requiring only verbal components:. Planetar critical role
Movanic devas were a kind of angel and members of one of the three orders of the devasthe others being astral devas and monadic devas. Devas appeared as human -like men and women [note 1] of extraordinary beauty or handsomeness with two magnificent feathered wings emerging from their backs. Movanic devas had lithesome frames capable of extraordinary agility, with skin of milky white hue and hair and eyes that appeared silvery. Devas were averse to clothing; when they must adhere to mortal custom, they donned simple loincloths or other coverings. In a peaceful moment, a movanic deva would adopt the shape of a humanoid or an animal. The movanic devas were the weakest yet the most numerous of the devas. Nevertheless, the order of movanic devas was politically equal to the orders of astral and monadic devas, and there was no rivalry between them. Movanic devas fought as infantry in battles against the forces of darkness, and they did so with pride. The movanic devas had the privilege of traveling to the Material Plane at will to aid prominent followers of the gods of good in times of great need. While they more often appeared disguised as humanoids or animalsthey could manifest in their winged angelic form if this suited their needs. They usually worked alone, but also operated in pairs, trios, or squads of up to six members. Well-traveled in the planes and in the mortal world, and gaining a greater understanding of the affairs of mortals, some movanic devas saw themselves as more worldly than their astral and monadic kin. Nevertheless, no deva would knowingly deal peaceably with evil beings, but those of non- lawful bent sometimes dealt with neutral beings. Movanic devas loved battle, though not to the extent of the monadic devas. Reacting swiftly and never taken by surprise, they tended to dive into melee, with firm grips on their flaming swords. By parrying with their flaming sword, a movanic deva could deflect missiles and hurled weapons and counter rays and other spells that targeted them alone, even ones that were unavoidable, like magic missile. However, they had to be aware of an incoming attack to deflect it, and they could not deflect two simultaneous strikes. Movanic devas possessed all the powers, protections, and traits common to devas and to other angels, and many more of their own. Whether with the spell polymorph self or an inherent ability to change shape, they could change their form into that of any humanoidfrom halfling to human in size, or into an animal. With the soothing presence of nature itself, a movanic deva had a calm nature that creatures of the natural world invariably found pleasing. No animal or plant would willingly attack one, not unless compelled by magic. However, reptiles and similar creatures, and monstrous creatures, could attack them freely. Possessing a divine equilibrium, movanic devas were immune to the deleterious effects of planes suffused with either negative energy or positive energymaking them immune to death spells and loss of experience or life-force.

Formally angels, during the traditional past of the Dawn War, became enamored with the mortal world and therefore the creatures that lived upon it. Such a lot in order that they chose to petition the Primal Spirits, the powers that reigned over the planet proper, for the proper to become more like mortal beings and live upon the planet. The Primal Spirits agreed, but at a price; now, devas reincarnate over and over as strange, half-mortal creatures, possessing chains of memories reaching deep into their past, but cursed never to return to their angelic glory of old. Worse still, if they fall from the high standards expected of their race, then their reincarnations may go sour, transforming them into twisted fiends whose sins are manifested through bestial features. Devas are one among the oldest races within the Nentir Vale setting, hearkening back to the youth of the planet itself. Though never numerous enough to erect their own empires, their influence has been a continuing presence throughout history, as they strive to uphold both their ancient desire to guard and nurture the planet they love such a lot and their original calling to battle the agents of annihilation; archons, aberrations, devils then forth. It goes without saying that devas have accomplished great things — sometimes terrible things, but always great. Filed Under: Spells. Return to top of page.
Devas appeared as human -like men and women [note 2] of extraordinary beauty or handsomeness with two magnificent feathered wings emerging from their shoulders. Their coloration varied: astral devas were golden-hued with fair hair and amber eyes; monadic devas were dark-skinned with black hair and green eyes; and movanic devas were milky-white-skinned with silvery hair and eyes. Devas were averse to clothing; when they must adhere to mortal custom, they donned simple loincloths or other coverings. When a deva died, all parts of their body, what clothes they wore, their weapons, and their other possessions vanished completely, and thus none were ever examined closely. Devas shared the devotion to goodness of the other angels. There were three varieties or orders of devas: the astral devas, the monadic devas, and the movanic devas. They usually worked alone, but also operated in pairs, trios, or squads of up to six members. Devas were servants and messengers of the good gods, able to go wherever in the planes they were ordered. However, they often had to be proactive and deliver their messages at the points of their swords, and, indeed, preferred it. Thus, they were also mighty warriors in the battle against evil, wherever in the multiverse it appeared. Only rarely did they act on their own initiative, but when they did, it invariably involved righteous violence. Each order of devas had a different role in the grand scheme of the Upper Planes. They also traveled to the Astral Plane to rescue lost or stranded mortals of good alignment. The privileged movanic devas traveled to the Prime Material Plane to aid prominent followers of the gods of good in times of great need. While they more often appeared disguised as humanoids or animalsthey could manifest in their winged angelic form if this suited their needs. Whatever realm or plane they were sent to, devas used their shapechanging powers to adopt a suitable guise, usually appearing to mortals as an unremarkable animal or humanoid. Some devas acted as angelic guides to mortal aasimarappearing to them in visions and offering wise direction. The devas served the gods of good as their proxies and served the cause of goodness itself. Devas of all kinds were known to serve the deities AzuthIlmaterand Mystrawhile movanic devas in particular served DeneirLliiraand Milil. They served as the common soldiery in the armies of good in the eternal war against evil. They dwelled and worked in total harmony with the other beings of the Upper Planes, and had a close relationship with other aasimon, especially planetars. On occasion, when the need was great, a planetar would lead a band of devas on a mission for a good deity. Devas possessed all the powers, protections, and traits common to the aasimon or angel and many more of their own. Like other angels, a deva could envelop themselves with a potent protective aura against evil, similar to protection from evil or magic circle against evil but twice as strong and even combined with a minor globe of invulnerability. All devas were initially reported to use the spells cure disease and cure serious wounds thrice a day; cure light woundsdetect trapsand dispel magic each seven times a day; heal once a day; and detect evildetect illusiondetect magicetherealnessknow alignmentinvisibility and invisibility, 10' radiuslight varying with the kind of devaprotection from evil varying with the devaread magicremove curseremove fearteleport without errortonguesand ultravisionas often as they willed. They also had a constant infravision in place. Before and after DR, they were known to be all immune to injury from cold, electricity, gases, natural fire, non-magical weapons, and magic missile. They could not be petrified or poisoned. Astral and movanic devas were resistant to magical fires, while monadic devas were completely immune. All orders of deva had the power to change their own form at will, either through the spell polymorph self the spell polymorph restricted to themselves only, or an inherent ability to change shape. When a deva died on the Prime Material plane or the Elemental planes all parts of their body, what clothes they wore, their weapons, and their other possessions vanished completely. It took ten years to regain the power to manifest a corporeal form. If they died on any other plane, then they were destroyed utterly. Although they might use many different weapons, each order of deva commonly wielded a specific weapon: a disrupting mace for the astral deva, a smiting mace or rod for the monadic deva, and a flaming two-handed sword for the movanic deva. They had no need of any treasure or wealth, though might still carry useful items. In the late 15 th century, any weapon wielded by a deva was radiantly magical. They usually carried very large maces.

The primary goal of PREVIEW is to identify the most efficient lifestyle pattern for the prevention of type-2 diabetes in a population of pre-diabetic overweight or obese individuals. The project comprises two distinct lines of evidence, both embracing European and overseas countries:1) A multicentre, clinical randomized intervention trial with a total of 2,500 pre-diabetic participants, including children and adolescents, adults and elderly. The duration will be 3 years for the adults and elderly, and 2 years for the children and adolescents. Focus in both lines of evidence will be on diet (specifically protein and glycemic index) and intensity of physical activity, as well as their interaction with the lifestyle factors, habitual stress and sleeping pattern as well as behavioural, environmental, cultural, and socioeconomic variables. PREVIEW will significantly increase our knowledge on how specific lifestyle factors can help preventing type-2 diabetes. The strategic impact of PREVIEW concerns the massive problems associated with the global diabesity epidemic (obesity and type-2 diabetes) and therefore includes partners from Europe (East, West, North and South) and Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. PREVIEW will thereby contribute to improving health over the life-span of the population in Europe as well as worldwide. Overall the public health and socioeconomic impact of PREVIEW is expected to be very significant. The project is led by Professor Anne Raben from the University of Copenhagen and there are 15 partners in the consortium. The project will run for 6 years starting in January 2013.
